Dona Carter hails from Hartford, Connecticut, devoting herself to music at an early age. She attended the Hartford Conservatory of Music and earned a B.A. degree in music at Barnard College, Columbia University. She also attended the Jazz Mobile Workshop was encouraged by musician friends to form her own group. She made her debut at Town Hall and has been performing in the New York Metropolitan area ever since. She’s recorded several CDs including Make a Wish, DC Jazz and Heart to Heart, and The Best of Dona Carter. She has a MA Degree in Music from Lehman College and is Certified to teach.


She’s performed all over the east coast and in Europe as well. Thanks to the internet, her music has been heard in places as far away as Japan and Siberia, where

DC Jazz was on the play list of a local station. An experienced pianist, Dona Carter has appeared in venues as varied as Bryant Piano Jazz Series,Cleopatra's Needle Dinner Club, to St. Peter’s Church in midtown Manhattan. Never content to rest on her laurels, Dona Carter has directed and written an original musical theater piece “Portraits in Major and Minor.” It features several actors, singers and musicians who weave their way through unique stories combined with original music. She has done interviews on WHCR FM & WKCR FM. Dona is a member of BMI, Local 802. She also directed the IWJ Jazz Chorus which performed in two festivals.


A music educator, piano teacher and mentor to many, Dona Carter has presented her students in recitals at Steinway Hall. She taught music in NYC and NJ public schools for many years. One of her most successful students is an R & B producer with two platinum songs to his credit, and also written music for 2 movies: Love the Hard Way and Our Song. One of Dona’s memorable ballads, “You Were Someone,” is also featured in Our Song. Over the years, many outstanding musicians have graced the stages with Dona Carter’s bands. She has been active composing, arranging and co-directing a big band jazz orchestra. Her current band consists of five professional musicians.
